Boukabou
Forward In Reverse
Remember when radio meant summer, the open road and big choruses? Sydney based artist Boukabou does. After stints writing for major-label artists, he’s decided to step into the sun-light with the most confident debut of 2008.
Forward In Reverse isn’t beholden to fashion. These are unashamedly optimistic songs, filled with sing- along melodies and up-front vocals. Think ‘70s AM radio. Thinks ‘80s suburban parties. Then forget about them both and think instead of the sort of timeless popcraft that you’ve missed over the last few years of makeup-caked emo and production- line r’n’b.
He’s also surrounded himself with some top-flight sidemen: Australian rock master Wayne Connolly(the welcome mat, knievel) mixed the album(produced the vines and won ARIA producer of the year for Josh Pyke), which Boukabou co-produced with Mark Bowring (Lava-land and Analog), while Lee Maloney (Lost Prophets) and Paul Wheeler (Lo-tel, Sneaky Sound System) contribute their musical talents.
While the songs were inspired by his travels around the world and his voice has drawn comparisons with the whisper-to-a-bellow dynamic of Bono, Boukabou is still undeniably Australian.
You could easily mention artists like Jet or Powderfinger: this is a man with a respect for classic songcraft, a deft way with a falsetto and isn’t scared to be catchy. Opening track Voice Up In My Head sets his pop-rock agenda from the outset, although the synths on How Can I? even suggests a sneaking fondness for INXS’s poppier moments, and the opening acoustic strum of Feeling It heralds an anthem worthy of Oasis.
We could go on, but comparisons only do so much: one listen to Boukabou will confirm the arrival of a significant new original Australian artist.
